MODTONES RINGS IN THE NEW YEAR, RINGS OUT 2005 WITH TOP RINGTONES LIST
San Francisco, CA (January 25, 2006) - Mobile entertainment firm Moderati proudly presents its year-end wrap-up of ringtones, with some regional flavor this year. Moderati provides ringtones for all major and second-tier wireless carriers in the U.S. under its consumer brand Modtones or the carrier's own brand. This distribution network uniquely positions Moderati to highlight ringtone trends across the country.
Hip-hop dominated the top ringtones list again this year, with 60% of the songs from hip-hop artists. Video game themes (Super Mario Brothers) and evergreen movie themes (Halloween) made their mark this year as well, with top five finishes. Cracking the top 20, a bit out of left field, was "Scotty Doesn't Know" by Lustra, a song from the 2004 movie Eurotrip.
Just for fun, Moderati compared the top download lists for the East vs. West Coast, using area code as a proxy for region. Although far from scientific in an age of number portability, some interesting trends emerged. Dr. Dre's 2000 release, Still Dre, remained on the top of the West Coast charts, ending 2005 as the #4 most downloaded tone, compared with an East Coast ranking of #19. Those back East seem to prefer the mob-drenched theme of the Godfather, bringing it in at #3, compared with a #14 ranking from Angelenos.
Oddly enough, the O.C theme song California came in at #16 in the 917 area, but did not make the top 20 in the 213 area. Perhaps Angelenos are a bit jealous of the popularity of their orange neighbors to the south?
Comparing downloads of Northern Californians in the 415 area code to Southern Californians in 310, Moderati found yet more differences, reinforcing the theory that the two areas really could be separate states. The top ringtone for the 415 area code was the video game theme Super Mario Brothers, not surprising in the land of Electronic Arts, Sega and LucasArts. That same ringtone landed at #6 in the 213 area code.
Without further ado, the Top 20 polyphonic ringtones of 2005 from Modtones. Moderati officially proclaims these tones as "so last year."
